· The Department provides fire protection for the communities of Hamilton Beach and Howard Beach following a major multiple fatality fire. We also help to protect the community of Rockwood Park bringing the district to its current 9 square mile response area.

· In addition to Fire Suppression, today's WHBFD members are trained in a variety of Rescue techniques including Water Rescue and emergency vehicle extrication using the Department's "Jaws Of Life".

· Members can choose to serve as Firefighters, Emergency Medical Technicians or Dispatchers.

· Many of the Department's members are employees of the City's Fire Department, Police Department and the FDNY's Emergency Medical Service Command who choose to give of their own time and their expertise to serve the community.
